Lobster 04:57
I look at your face It’s six and one half dozen That I’d take a bullet for you The elephant in the room’s that I’ve got a soft a spot I’d give my right leg Bend over backwards for you It’s like tic tac toe And I can never remember that trick I always take the wrong turn Second guessing my instinct again I say we’ll be together Until life rains on our parade Beyond the benefit of doubt They still conflate You’re still the icing on my cake You’re still It’s 6.5 dozen I won’t sell you under the bus So don’t give me a shadow of doubt To hold up the pedestal of us You’re not my one trick Johnny, Not my one take wonder You’re still the icing on my cake And I’m up to my neck And I say them all wrong The words change place I look at your face And I say them all wrong The words change place I look at your face And I say them all wrong I look at your face It’s like tic tac toe And I can never remember that trick I always take the wrong turn Second guessing my instinct again I say we’ll be together Until life rains on our parade Beyond the benefit of doubt The world is our lobster The world is our lobster The world is our lobster The world is ours

New to You 05:27
Stark critics all around you never sure if you’re coming, going…. but all you see around you is not you…. When the ice breaks you’ll be okay try to see what’s not before you dark doubt unspun draping curtains all around you You don’t know what to say so you just slip away Shout courage when you’re out there you put your foot down but you’re not getting anywhere though you keep trying and you try and you try It’s all new to you All new to you All new new to you Standing stock still in the evening the gentle nudge gets you nothing gets you nowhere but its true All new to you (all new) All new new to you To you to you

I feel her touch on my shoulder She stays if I only ignore her Don’t catch her eye Or off she will fly Will only suffer the fool for a moment She pulled me in with a whisper Turning around then I see her Wisp of a thing She gave me her name With no doubt that I’d take her home Where to do you run? Where do you run? Where to do you run? Where to do you run? Where do you run? And where do you dream? Aisling Effortlessly she takes flight Speck motes they capture the light She walks through the walls And whittles her log Wills the others to do all her dirty work I see my wisp of a willow Asleep in the sun on a pillow Inner demons at bay She’s utterly still With dreams she floats away Where to do you run? Where do you run? Where to do you run? Where to do you run? Where do you run? And where do you dream? Aisling mmm mmm Good night

Hey Lucy 04:06
Hey Lucy, hey Lucy Trying hard just to figure it out Lucy, hey Lucy Trying hard just to figure it out Lucy Trying so… Hey Lucy Leave the rest Arms outstretched You push through the darkness Feel the world around you change Coming home again Leave the rest Snowflakes caress Hey Lucy, hey Lucy Trying hard just to figure it out Lucy, hey Lucy Trying hard just to figure it out Lucy Trying so hard Hey Lucy War on every side Amber eyes Glow liquid gold in fire Don’t run from who you are A few drops will restore Like flowers grown in sun You can not run Flying through wind of water color Briar, bush, stream green and blue Clutching tight, giddiness, elated The world turns upside as you break through Breathe oh breathe feel the lifeblood renew Breathe oh breathe battle calls to you Lucy Hey Lucy Sky sets red Retrace my steps Back to my room Please come back

Holding On 04:12
She paints the leaves she’s coming through You don’t know if you want her to Hues deepen ever gradually So subtle sometimes hard to see Holding on Through the night grown long Winds blow strong But you still hold on Some things obscured now clear to you no longer hidden now in view Yet still beyond your daily mind the mist persists you still feel blind If only there could be another way there could be another way holding on/there could be another way nights grown long holding on/there could be another way but you still hold…on

Oh Mama! 03:19
Oh mama when you said think ahead, look both ways (look both ways) Oh mama when you said make a plan for each day (for each day) Oh mama when you said I’ll be here like always, (like always) You didn’t wanna go Oh mama when you said what you said now I say (now I say) I feel so confused every slightly bemused What’s going on? What am I to do…do? Oh mama are you there? Send a prayer and show me (and show me) Everyday you’re away slip a little further from me (far from me) Radio plays your song Stop still, listen closely (so closely) Could this be from you? Wanna hope for the silence on your end runs so deep (runs so deep) Must I be confused? Always slightly bemused Don’t know what’s going on Don’t know what I should do…do I hear your voice Across the line You say you’re lost I say you’re fine I see you walking You’re standing tall You say it’s not right I’m gonna fall Oh mama hear me say think ahead, look both ways (look both ways) Oh mama hear me say make a plan for each day (for each day) Oh mama when you said I’ll be here like always, (like always) You didn’t wanna go Oh mama hear your voice from my lips as I say I still feel confused Ever slightly bemused So I send out this song To find a way back to you…you Oh mama!

Some distant time Why not reach? For something…amazing Some distant place We might meet Why not reach? Away from the sun From all we know Journey goes on Fellow traveler Oceans of ice Electrical storms Billions of years Fellow traveler Over the phone We agree We will be…forever Willing to know Willing to risk Everything Through our galaxy Trajectory Beneath the plane Fellow traveler Brace solar winds Ebbing and flow Interstellar goal Fellow traveler And as I lay the waves of my body are recorded and they travel And as I lay the sounds of my brain are recorded Some distant time Why not reach? For something…amazing Some distant place We might meet Why not reach? Vastness of space Cosmic intervention We found our place Fellow traveler And when we’re gone Journey goes on On to the stars Fellow traveler Fellow traveler Fellow traveler

You turned away nothing spoken left to say Yet uncertain could you stay would you turn away? And who knows come what may but darlin’ you slipped away Yet tomorrow come what may you turned away Yet tomorrow another day you turned away

about

Beth Meyers and Monica Mugan’s duo collaboration, Damsel defies easy categorization. The sonic world their music lives in is informed by the many genres these two artists were born from. Monica’s songwriting style is as much influenced by her classically and contemporary trained acoustic guitar pedigree as it is by being brought up in a household reverberating country and folk music from the 70s. Beth weaves her classical violist side into a song’s complex orchestrations and brings her indie rock experience as supporting musician to the likes of Regina Spektor, Sufjan Stevens and the National. ‘New to You’ is the band’s second album, releasing on their in-house label as a physical CD on October 30, 2021. Originally scheduled to be recorded at Miner Street Studio in Philadelphia in early 2020, their project was put on hold due to the pandemic. This “ended up being a blessing in disguise” Meyers recalls, “we had planned for the usual rushed, time-is-money situation and had all of our ducks in a row to finish as quickly as possible. Instead we were forced, the whole world was, to slow down. It was truly a gift to be able to focus on this project at a time when we didn’t know when we would play live again. We really had a chance to listen to what we were making and create more freely over time. It never would have been this way!”

‘New to You’ comes from the eponymous track which centers around the idea of tackling a new situation and pushing forward against challenges. Mugan wrote this song “as a sort of pep talk for a friend. I could see that her fear and resistance to change was debilitating and she was stymied. I don’t like change either so this was all very relatable. When I shared what I had of the song with Beth we both had an ‘aha!’ moment - we wanted to create that swirling chaos of a mind racing - we needed layers and many of them.” The album also has a double entendre - a new direction for sound production in the studio and a radical shift from their first album, ‘Just Sit So’ (October 29, 2017). Their debut album, made at Guilford Sound reflected their first songwriting ventures together and presents an honest, straightforward record of their live sound as a duo. ‘New to You’ is a branching forward and outward. Monica and Beth, both multi-instrumentalists, brought their talents together with the creative wizardry of their co-producer, Matt Poirer. This album features a few other musicians - “we used to be in a kickass band with our husbands, QQQ (New Amsterdam Records) before we formed Damsel,” Meyers explains. “When the band took a hiatus we were like ‘we have ideas’ and hence Damsel was born! For this record, we thought it would be fun to invite them back in for a few tunes.” Jason Treuting (Beth’s beau) of So Percussion adds his drum set and percussion across the album while Dan Trueman (Monica’s beau) brings his hardanger fiddle to “Aisling Says Goodnight.” Various tunes also feature their dear friend, Florent Ghys on upright bass.

This album is a culmination of songwriting efforts from the two since their first album dropped. Beth and Monica, with their foundation of trust and musical creativity, continue to weave their personal stories and perspectives (Lobster, New to You, Aisling Says Goodnight, I Don’t Know Why, Holding On, Oh Mama!, The Last, Daire) with found stories and literature (Hey Lucy, Better Get Ready, Fellow Traveler) into their captivating lyrics and orchestrated textures. ‘New to You’ is rich with personality and whimsy, unapologetically inviting listeners into a space without ready labels.
